> What is Hijama?
Hijama is Wet Cupping administered by a Muslim practitioner. It’s derived from the word “hajm” which means sucking. Hijama involves performing small incisions on specific points of the body (depending on the condition and target area) and applying suction cups to these points to draw out a minimal amount of septic or toxic blood.
As it has been reported in the authentic hadith on the authority of Anas Ibn Malik;
“Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping.” Sahih Al-Bukhari 5371.
> What are the Health Benefits of Hijama?
Hijama therapy is very beneficial and can successfully treat numerous health conditions. Some of its benefits include:
> What should I do before my Hijama treatment?
>What should I do after my Hijama treatment?
> What happens during the Hijama treatment session?
> When are the recommended dates to perform Hijama?
According to Islamic Prophetic Medicine, it is recommended to perform Hijama on specific dates in the month. There is a great wisdom behind Hijama therapy on these specific dates; these are the 17th, 19th and 21st of the Islamic lunar month. However, hijama can be performed outside of these specific dates to treat conditions such as lower back pain, arthritis, migraine, etc. View the calendar to find out when is the next << Sunnah Days >>
> What About Disclosures, Consents and Waivers?
Is Hijama painful or does it hurt?
The application of the suction cups feels like placing a vacuum cleaner on your skin and the incisions feel like a light scratch. Don’t worry, we have never had anyone unable to complete their hijama treatment due to pain. We do advise patients to perform slow relaxed breathing during treatment as this will help ease tension in your muscles and encourage better blood flow.
How long after surgery can I do Hijama?
As a note, Hijama is an excellent detox after surgery, especially for cases of major surgeries. However, we recommend you wait at least 6 months to 1 year after your surgery to ensure that the body is fully healed. In the meantime, if you are expecting to go for another surgery, we strongly recommend you do not do hijama until you have successfully completed all your surgeries. To reduce any risk to your health and for optimal care, we also recommend that you speak with your primary care provider prior to receiving the hijama treatment therapy, in case you recently had a surgery (i.e. within a 6 months - 1 year period).
Can I do Hijama if I am pregnant?
No! As a general rule hijama is not safe while expecting. Though other uphold the opinion that it can be done during the second trimester on the upper part of the back with mild pressure, there is a high risk of abortion or induced labor that might occur due to either the pressure inside the cups or the healing crisis post the hijama session.
How long after birth can I do Hijama?
As a note, Hijama is an excellent detox after childbirth, especially for women who have taken the epidural injection during labour and are left with long term back pain.
Can I do Hijama if I am menstruating?
Yes, it is safe for women to have Hijama done while on their menses there is no Islamic or Medical prohibition. Unless a woman is experiencing a heavy menstrual period and is not feeling well.
Can I do Hijama if I am breastfeeding?
Yes, you can. It can help prevent cases of mastitis, which is a condition whereby the milk ducts get blocked causing the breasts to become very hard and painful, inducing fever and a risk of infection. We will never cup directly on the area of the breasts.
